Week 2


 

I was once again back in the lab again this week. This week mainly consisted of further researching and brainstorming ideas. I am still in the planning stages, but thanks to the help of Josh, I have a much clearer direction of where I am headed with my authentic experience project.

Although I haven’t finalized my research question, it will likely revolve around using ECG to test plant action potential. So to get things started, we began the process of germinating Mimosa pudica seeds.

Outside of the lab, things are also going great. My final class for the semester just started this week, so I am now officially working with a full-time class load.

Week 8

    Hi all, hope everyone had a great spring break and is ready for the final half of the semester. Unfortunately, I was not able to make it to this week's team meeting as I had a Doctors appointment that ran long. At this point we are still in the process of analyzing the data we collected last year. After checking the 95% confidence interval of our data, we did find that our data landed within the range where can confidently say that our data is statistically meaningful. Meaning, our data did not fall within the range where it could simply be attributed to a mere coincidence.   For our next meeting, we will be going into further detail on the paper we are going to be writing. So it should be fun to start to bring everything back full circle now that we have looked at the numbers and try to put together our findings.

  This week I continued testing the aloe plants with the ECG. Unfortunately, we are still running into issues exporting the data into logger pro. The data we get in logger pro does not correlate to the readings we get in the ECG. This presents a problem as we try to collect data to analyze for our research. Next week, we are going to try connecting the ECG to the laptop in hopes of being able to capture the data live as we take the ECG readings. If that does not work, we are going to have to rethink how we collect data moving forward.

Week 6

  This week I worked on a model to apply to last season's playoffs in order to see how its predictions compared to the actual outcomes of the first round of playoff play. The model that I was assigned used different parameters to determine expected goals (xG) for teams depending on whether they were hosting the match or were the visiting team. For the 6 home teams in the first round of the playoffs, the model only considered goals scored while playing at home throughout the regular season for its xG calculations. For the 6 visiting teams, the model only considered the goals scored in away games that season to calculate xG. This model accurately predicted the result for four of the six matches in the first round of the playoffs. It should be interesting to see how the models from the rest of the group performed.
